Plan family golf outings so that the whole family can enjoy a game of golf together. Playing golf as a family presents a terrific opportunity for all to bond as a family while having fun chasing the golf ball from tee to green. However, bond only occurs if all of you are having fun and enjoying the experience. The tips in this article by Shannon Gurnee are designed to assure that playing together is the fun family bonding experience you desire.
This article stresses six tips that promote Family fun and togetherness on the golf course. These tips include Choosing the right course, checking everyone’s equipment before going to the course, setting behavioral ground rules while on the course, skipping holes if necessary and relaxing and enjoying the experience.
Choosing a golf course that is suitable for a round of family golf involves several considerations. It must be long (difficult) enough to be a challenge to the older kids but not so long or difficult that the littler ones grow frustrated. A par three or par sixty would be good choices. Find a course that is not too far away. A long car ride to the golf course could rerail your outing before it has begun. Make sure the course clubhouse is open and has amenities such as a snack bar to take care of your hungry and thirsty golfers. Find out where the bathrooms are located at the clubhouse and on the course itself.
Make sure that each bag has the full compliment of clubs for all of the players. Be sure that they have been wiped clean and are ready for play. Bring plenty of golf balls, tees and ball markers. If you are riding in electric carts be sure that each is full charged. If you will be using pull carts, make sure each pulls smoothly and is set up to be pulled by little people.
Make sure that everyone understands the ground rules before you begin playing. Forbid yelling and disruptive behavior. This is an opportunity to teach children about golf etiquette and good sportsmanship.
Make playing together fun. Compliment good shot and do not worry about keeping score. But if scoring is what kids want make your own rules. Just because the scorecard says it is a par 3 or 4 does not mean the kids have to play to that standard. In family golf a par 3 might be a par 6. Try not to put too much emphasis on getting the ball into the hole. Help the kids when they putt and encourage them to help each other.
If your group’s play is slow enough that you are in danger of holding up a group behind you, just skip a hole and take the pressure off playing in a hurry. If skipping ahead is not feasible, move aside and let the faster group play through.
