6 Underrated Camping Destinations Beloved By Outdoor Pros

Campers who desire the peace and quiet of the Great Outdoors face the difficultly and disturbance of crowed campsites during the summer camping season. Their solution is to plan hiking adventures at some spectacular, but underrated camping locations where finding the solitude of the outdoors is possible even in the summer. This article by Here magazine introduces its readers several outdoors professionals each of whom recommends their favorite underrated camping destinations. Five of these recommended locations are in the United States and one is in Europe. While a trip to Europe may not be in the cards for many, the other locals are in the USA.

The first location is recommended by Dawn Walker, the assistant manager of the Kentucky Horse Park Campground. She introduces the reader to the Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park in Slade Kentucky. This park features limestone arches, old growth trees, crystal clear water and wooded campsites.

The second location also is a recommendation offered by Dawn Walker. Her ‘second favorite” camping destination is any of the wonderful campsites along the Blue Ridge Mountains. While these mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain Chain, her favorite place to camp is near Linville, North Carolina.

The third recommended camping destination comes from Dan Yates, founder and managing director of Pitchup. Mr. Yates extolls the virtues of camping in Slovenia. He touts that there are “scores” of high-end camping and glamping locations. Slovenia offers everything from chocolate-themed glamping and free wine  near Maribor-Pohorje Ski Resort to fairytale forest glamping. Perhaps you might prefer safari tents in the mountains with private saunas or camping in a vineyard near the Italian border.

The fourth camping location is brought to us by Gerry Seavo, founder of Explore Kentucky. He  introduces us to the Alum Ford Campground in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. This campground near Stearns, Kentucky is accessible by automobile and by hiking the “Sheltowee Trace Trail”. You can paddle down the Big South Fork on multi-day excursions, take advantage of the park’s many trails or travel to nearby Yahoo Falls, Yahoo Overlook and Princess Falls.

The fifth camping destination is Adirondack State Park, located four to six hours from Aurora, New York. It is a favorite destination of Matt Stevenson of Inns Of America. Mr. Stevenson’s favorite campsites are those where you set up your camp and feel that you are all alone. At Adirondack you can have this experience and enjoy both the sounds of nature and a starry night, as well as be near enough to one of the many streams or lakes for a day’s fishing.

The sixth and final underrated destination on this article’s list is the Petoskey RV Resort in Northern Michigan. It is recommended by Caleb Hartung, CEO of Campspot. He recommends this resort because the area features great hiking, lakes, quaint towns, wineries, sand dunes and numerous scenic locations. Nearby campers can visit Petoskey State Park, Bear River Valley Recreation Area, Petoskey Beards Brewery, the Back Lot Beer Garden and Mackinaw Trail Winery and Brewery.
