A look at how The Masters began

By John Boyette

This article by John Boyette documents the retirement of Bobby Jones, the creation of that masterpiece, the Augusta National and establishment of the Masters as a major tournament in the world of golf.

I looked forward to watching the Masters on TV for as long as I can remember, watching with my dad since the days of black and white TVs, when coverage was limited to Saturday and Sunday afternoons beginning on the 15th hole.

From the time Bobby Jones retired from competitive golf in 1930 to the moment he teed off in the first Masters in April,1934, Bobby Jones, Alister MacKenzie and Clifford Roberts had found the property, designed and built the golf course and established an enduring tournament.
