Bike Maintenance: Get Ready For Spring
By Astrid Kroger
Spring is in the air and it is time to transition to cycling in the Springtime. Before you get back on your bike it is essential that you examine it and determine what maintenance is necessary. This article by Astrid Kroger offers excellent advice on getting your bike ready for that first Spring ride.
Your first step is to give your bike a good cleaning with soap and water. Giving your bike a good scrubbing with a toothbrush will allow you to really evaluate your bike’s condition, plus a clean bike will perform better. Once the bike has been cleaned, inspect you wheels and tires for maintenance issues. Are the tires worn, cracked or unable to hold the proper pressure? Do the wheels spin freely without wobbling?
Next, check the brakes to see whether the pads are worn and need replacing. Make sure that the pad does not rub against the wheel and springs back when the brake lever is released. Lastly, check the chain to see if it is loose or damaged. If so, replace it, but if not make sure it is clean and well oiled.
When you have completed this maintenance routine, your bike will be in great condition and you will be ready to ride! Thorough maintenance of your bike enhances your performance and keeps you safe. When the unexpected happens you will be better prepared to avoid disaster.
