Fly Casting for Distance – 6 Tips

By: Deneki Outdoors

Fly casting feels like painting the sky with your rod, shaping the motion of your line as it soars over your head, behind you and then out to your target. The synergy and symmetry of your arm motion, the rod and the line create the masterpiece of a beautiful cast. This article from Deneki Outdoors explains how the fly cast can be made for distance as well as beauty.

The Art of Fly Fishing

The article discusses six tips for achieving a long distance cast. It focuses on casting the line with a high trajectory. Next, the drift or length of the casting stroke must be proportional to the amount of line being cast. Also, you should concentrate on rocking your feet so that your weight is on your back foot on the back cast and on your front foot on the forward cast. As your rod hand increases in speed to accelerate the casting stroke to an abrupt stop, your other hand that holds the line must match the speed of the rod hand. To complete the cast you must transfer the energy created by the rod to the line by stopping the rod abruptly. This sudden stop is easier to do with firm squeeze of your rod hand when you stop. Finally, to cast your line out as far as possible, grip your rod closer to the reel. This will give you a longer lever that increases the energy the rod creates, thereby generating a longer cast.

If you adopt, practice and master these six techniques, you should become adept at the distance cast when you really need one!
