Summer means that summer vacations are here and kids need a health and safe way to have fun. If you are looking for a safe way to get them out of the house and into the fresh air, you should consider the opportunity to do this by taking the kids on a family bike ride. This article by A.C. Shelton presents some helpful tips for planning and enjoying a safe bike ride for the whole family.

The first step to take is to assure yourself that everyone’s bicycle is in good working order. If financially feasible, take the bikes to your local bike shop for tune-ups. If not, do a safety check of the tire, brakes, chain and the quick release of both wheels. If it is necessary to buy a bike for a younger child, that bike should be the one that gives them the most confidence to ride. Avoid the mistake of purchasing a bike for a kid to “grow into”. Other options include a bike trailer or add-on bike seat. Once the bike situation is resolved, make sure that everyone has a good fitting bicycle helmet.

It is an excellent idea to do some rides in the parking lot so the kids can practice quick stops, sharp turns to the left and right. You might create an obstacle course for the kids to follow and practice their skills. To avoid mishaps on crowded paths and trials, practice riding in parks or fields on different surfaces, such as grass, dirt and gravel. Playing games such a turtle races and bike polo can help to develop the skills needed to bike safely.

Develop a plan focusing on the safest route to take based upon the skill levels of your children. Have a plan for what to do in an emergency as well as how to communicate during the ride. You must determine where you position your bike on the ride. With younger riders you might ride behind and to the side of the kids so you can see the kids and the possible hazards ahead. If you children are older, you might let them ride ahead, but only when they clearly understand the rules about riding together.

Plan you route carefully to minimize traffic and hazards. Once you have settled on a route ride it by yourself at least once before the family ride. for trouble spots like potholes and intersections. It is important to tell someone when you are riding, where you are going and who is making the trip. If the is a spot where safety requires that you get off the bikes and walk a while, there is no shame in doing so. As other cyclists for advice on safe routes or you can post on neighborhood sites like NextDoor and Facebook that you are searching for safe bike routes nearby.

Pack plenty of water and snacks for the trip and plan a rest stop along the way to make sure the kids are well hydrated and fueled up for the journey home. You also should bring along band-aids, hand sanitizer, alcohol wipes. If your child has allergies or asthma, bring an extra inhaler and EpiPen.
