Nutrition and Cycling Performance

By: Landry Bobo

This is an excellent article that discusses the relationship between good nutrition and cycling performance focusing on the impact of carbs and carb load on performance. Landry points out that, “one of the big differences that sets elite riders apart from beginners is their nutrition.” Understanding your body and diet will guide you in the direction you need for learning how to improve your endurance levels, strength, balance, and decision making. Nutrition has the ability to affect every single system in your body. So why not treat it as important as it is?

Those among us who compete in cycling events should consider carb loading three or four days before an event. That does not mean we should eat nothing but mashed potatoes for three days. Rather, we should moderately increase our carb intake during this time.

Clearly, an understanding of the relationship between nutrition, carb intake and cycling performance will enhance the benefits of cycling for riders at all skill levels. Not only does nutrition lead to better energy but it will also allow you to continue to fit into your cycling gear!
