Summer golf season is such a great time of year. A summer of sunshine, longer daylight and manicured greens offers the promise of many fun and enjoyable rounds of golf. While summer golf offers fresh air, sunshine, healthy exercise and countless endorphin rushes, it does present certain physical hazards that must be addressed. The two primary objectives of this advice involve protecting yourself from the rays of the sun and the very hot days it generates. Golfers must plan rounds of golf when the days are cooler. Play early in the morning or in the late afternoon. Avoid the heat of the day and keep off the course from noon until five o’clock in the afternoon. This way you avoid the hotest times of the day when you would be most susceptible to dehydration and heatstroke.

 

Wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses to protect yourself against sunburn, sunstroke and eye damage. Protecting yourself from the heat is just as important as protection from the sun’s rays. Drink plenty of water or isotonic continuously throughout your round. Only eat a light meal an hour or so prior to teeing off. Once on the course, eat food that will give you energy. Energy bars, unsalted nuts and fruit are your best choices.

 

You should bring at least two towels. One cold towel to keep you face and neck cool and a dry towel to keep you hands and forearm dry. Summer golf is time for golf carts. Walking the course on hot summer days can be a physical challenge for the best of us. Riding is safer and adds to your enjoyment of the day. The wind in your face as you drive to your ball is a welcome respite from the heat. If you must walk, then do so with an umbrella.
